Concrete for Security and Widefield Homes
Security-Widefield is one of the largest communities in the Colorado Springs area that is not a city, and homeowners here hire concrete contractors for a lot of replacement work. Wikipedia lists 38,639 residents at the 2020 census and 13,412 housing units across about 13.5 square miles. The area is governed by El Paso County rather than a city council. The Census Bureau first defined a Security CDP for the 1960 census and expanded it to Security-Widefield for 1970, which gives a sense of how long these neighborhoods have been around. We replace and repair driveways, walks, patios, steps and garage floors throughout both communities.
Concrete that has been through a lot of winters
S.A. Wilson Elementary in Security was built between 1959 and 1961 and listed on the National Register in 2017, a reminder that some of these streets have been occupied for more than 60 years. Driveways and walks from the earliest decades have been patched, lifted by roots and cracked by frost. We often find a mix: an original walk, a driveway replaced in the 1990s, and a patio someone added later. Each needs its own assessment.
Common problems we see here include driveway panels that have tilted toward the garage, front stoops pulling away from the house, and walks where one section has heaved above the next. Some of these can be lifted or partially replaced. Others need to come out completely so the base can be rebuilt.
County rules, not city rules
Because Security-Widefield is unincorporated, El Paso County handles the right-of-way. The county's right-of-way FAQ says an Access Permit is required to build, rebuild, pave, alter or enlarge a driveway that meets a county road, even when the driveway has been there for years. Work in the right-of-way otherwise needs a separate Work in the Right-of-Way permit. Building permits go through the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. We confirm which of these applies to your address before we set a date.
A water story residents know well
According to a 2019 KOAA report, contamination from firefighting foam used at Peterson Air Force Base was discovered in local groundwater in 2016, and the Security Water District, which had drawn about half its water from the Widefield and Windmill Gulch aquifers, shut down wells and moved to other supplies. That does not change how concrete is poured, but it is a good reminder that water here moves through shallow ground. For a slab, the concern is simpler: water that collects beside or under concrete softens the base. We grade every pour to send water away from the house and the slab edge.
Repair or replace?
Here is how we usually think it through on a Security or Widefield property. If a slab has sunk evenly and is still in one piece, lifting can bring it back up for less than replacement. If cracks are fine and stable, sealing them keeps water out. If panels are broken into several pieces, scaling across the surface or rocking underfoot, replacement with a new base is the better investment. We price the options side by side so you can choose.

Security-Widefield Questions
Who issues driveway permits in Security-Widefield?
Security-Widefield is unincorporated, so El Paso County handles driveway access. The county requires an Access Permit to construct, reconstruct, pave or enlarge a driveway that meets a county road. We check what applies to your address before work begins.
Can a sunken sidewalk section be raised instead of replaced?
Often, if the section is still in one piece and has settled fairly evenly. Lifting costs less than replacement, but it does not fix a broken slab. We look at each section and tell you which approach makes sense.
Why does my front stoop pull away from the house?
Stoops often sit on backfill next to the foundation that settles over time, and roof water from above can wash out the base. We check the soil and drainage, then recommend lifting, rebuilding or replacing the steps.
