Concrete Work for Falcon's Growing Neighborhoods
Falcon lies along US 24 about 14 miles northeast of Colorado Springs, and it keeps concrete contractors busy with both new work and repairs. Wikipedia describes it as an unincorporated community governed by El Paso County, at about 6,831 feet, with neighborhoods including Meridian Ranch, Woodmen Hills, Paint Brush Hills, The Meadows, Antler's Ridge, Elkhorn Estates, Falcon Heights and Sunny Slope Estates. Residential growth picked up in the early 1990s, and Falcon School District 49 has been adding about 1,100 students a year. We pour patios, driveways, RV and shop pads, walks and steps, and we repair slabs across the area.
From railroad junction to suburb
Falcon's history is a story of rail lines. Wikipedia says the Denver and New Orleans Railroad built a rail bed near today's Eastonville Road in 1882, and the Chicago and Rock Island built one beside today's US 24 in 1888. By 1896 the town had two hotels, a newspaper, two depots and stockyards. A 1935 flood washed out tracks that were never rebuilt, and by 1975 only a few homes and the school were left. A business complex at Meridian Road and US 24 came in 1984, and the neighborhoods have been filling in ever since. In 2007, residents voted against incorporating, so Falcon is still governed by the county.
Newer homes, bigger plans
Most Falcon homes were built in the last three decades, so we see fewer worn-out driveways and more add-ons. Common requests include a full backyard patio where the builder left dirt, a wider driveway or third parking space, an RV or boat pad, and slabs for detached shops and sheds on larger lots. On a new-construction lot, the soil next to the foundation is often backfill that keeps settling for years, so we compact it properly before we pour and keep slabs from being locked to the house where movement is likely.
County access permits and gravel roads
Because Falcon is unincorporated, driveway access runs through El Paso County. The county requires an Access Permit to build, rebuild, pave or enlarge a driveway that meets a county road, and it covers installing or moving a driveway culvert. On a gravel road, the county's FAQ says a paved driveway should end before it reaches the culvert, and owners are responsible for the culvert and for keeping the ditch clear 10 feet on each side. Those details matter on some of the rural-feeling roads around Falcon, and we plan the driveway end around them.
Wind, sun and open plains
Falcon is high, open and windy. Wind and dry air can draw moisture out of fresh concrete in minutes, which leads to plastic shrinkage cracks if a crew is not ready. We schedule pours for the calmer part of the day, keep the surface from drying too quickly, and cure each slab properly. For patios on the west side of a house, we also talk about shade, because afternoon sun on bare concrete can make a patio hard to use in July.

- Gravel-road driveways. El Paso County says a paved driveway on a gravel road should end before the culvert; owners keep the ditch clear 10 feet each side.

Falcon Questions
Do I need a county permit to widen my driveway in Falcon?
If the work changes the driveway where it meets a county road, El Paso County requires an Access Permit, even for a driveway that has been there for years. Many Falcon neighborhoods also have HOA approval steps. We check both before scheduling.
Can you pour a slab for a detached shop or garage?
Yes. Shop slabs are sized to the building and the load, usually thicker at the edges and reinforced. If the building itself needs a permit, the slab is often part of that plan, so bring any drawings to the estimate.
When should I add a patio to a new-construction home?
Backfill near a new foundation can keep settling for a while. We compact the soil properly before pouring, and on very new lots we look closely at grading and drainage so the patio does not tip toward the house later.
